Graves Disease Diet
Graves disease is an autoimmune disease which most commonly affects the thyroid, causing it to grow to two times its natural size and become over-active. It can also cause the eye to bulge due to a swelling of the tissues located behind the eyeballs, and can have an affect on other systems of the body like the skin, the nervous system, and the reproductive organs.
Graves disease is more prevalent in women as compared to men, and often appears after the woman has gone through child birth. It has also been noticed that those who smoke cigarettes are more susceptible to the eye manifestations of the disease than those who do not. The disease also has a high hereditary component, which means that if one identical twin has the disease then the other twin will have it about 25% of the time.
Symptoms of Graves Disease
The symptoms of Graves disease include weight loss, frequent defecation, fatigue, goiter, and irritability.
Diet and Graves Disease
When deciding on a diet to counter the disease, one of the most important dietary modifications is to reduce your intake of iodine, which affects the functioning of the thyroid gland. Iodine rich foods such as beef liver, turkey, asparagus, broccoli, and iodized salt should be avoided. In addition, one should keep in mind the following basic rules:
1. Whole grains are very important. While a number of people are very conscious about the calories and carbohydrates that they eat in a day, if you are still struggling to lose weight, in all likelihood, you are not eating the right kind of grains. A number of studies have shown that a limited intake of complex carbohydrates actually aids in weight control. However, it is very important that you control the intake, as it could turn out to be a diet breaker in the end.
2. Every successful diet requires a daily intake of fiber, and this one is no different. A number of people do not realize that they are depriving their bodies of necessary fiber, which will help you feel full sooner and also aid digestion.
3. You must drink plenty of water. Since Graves’ disease is insulin resistant, it is of prime importance that your body remains hydrated. The water also helps a great deal in weight loss.
4. You must increase the amount of fruits and vegetables that you consume. Most people do not consume enough of these to satisfy the daily nutritional requirements. If you have a craving for something sweet, have an apple or a cherry, which will not only help keep off the weight, but increase your energy levels at the same time.
Consume lean meats with your meals, as your diet will not be successful if you eat only vegetables, fruits and whole grains. Chicken, turkey or fish can also help you feel fuller sooner and stay true to your diet. However, at all times, you must be sure to steam or bake the meat instead of frying it.
